Who should teach them?

Some people say the parents , others say the teachers but who would you say ? Lets check this out !
A 2003 study reported that an average sentence for a child molester is 7 years , and in most cases the offenders are released after serving three years . A certain sex offender was sentenced to 3 years in 1987 for sexually abusing a 7 year old boy . In 1988 he got another probation for 2nd degree sex abuse . In 1995 he earned a 3-9 years prison term for sexually abusing 2 boys . By 2005 he was on MYspace making friends.
I am really confused !What can the teacher do here ?

Gloria,
When we sit back and look at statistics it makes us sick. We, as teachers, need to be proactive in teaching our students how to be safe and teach their parents about the dangers lurking in cyberspace. That is the only thing I think that will help this unfortunate reality.

Teaching has to begin at home. Of course we can talk about safety in school, but what about before children are school age? They have got to know about strangers and dangers before school.

Parents are the first teachers; it is their job. Parents need to be resopnsible for their own children first, before anybody else. Classroom teachers can't do everything, it's not realistic.

Hi Gloria,

Wow how scary is that. What we can do is show this story to our students so they can be aware that they maybe talking to someone like this person. I have these conversations with my students all the time because maybe their parents aren't. I think the kids in my schools as all of my kids. At our school we also have parent workshops and memos going home to make parents aware of the dangers of social networks. Last fall we found quite a few students on myspace pretending to be alot older and allowing strangers to view their page. Needless to say we contacted their parents and they no longer have access to myspace. Sometimes it does take a village.

Hi Stacy, margie and Robin,
I thank you so much for your opinions . Its a rough road ahead of us and who knows it may just worst but we just have to do our best for the sake of the children.
